Advanced Graphic Design
The newest AMVJ track is already ahead of the curve. You will learn from the faculty who literally wrote the textbooks, then go beyond them. Immerse yourself in typography, motion graphics, and immersive design. AMVJ Graphic Design graduates return to the fleet equipped with skills the military is still learning to use.
Immersive Design
The next frontier of storytelling is already here. Design it.
The way we tell stories is changing faster than most communicators can track, and AMVJ designers are built to stay ahead of that curve. This advanced course teaches you to design and build immersive digital environments for the communications industry using cutting-edge extended reality (XR) technology. You’ll master the best practices, theoretical frameworks, and the vocabulary of design for XR, the same technology reshaping medicine, manufacturing, training, and media.
The question isn’t whether XR will transform military and civilian communications. It already is. The question is whether you’ll be the one designing that future. This course answers it.
Motion Design
Static images inform. Motion design commands attention.
In an era of infinite content, motion design is the tool that makes audiences stop and watch. This course gives you the full motion design stack, the technology, the strategy, and the storytelling architecture to build rich, platform-ready multimedia experiences. You’ll work with still imagery, video, audio, and type, developing your command of sequential design through rigorous motion graphic processes.
By the end, you’ll be able to take a project from a thumbnail sketch to final render, applying concept, timing, rhythm, and the critical eye to evaluate your own work and push it further. Every frame is a decision. Make them count.
Pixels & Print
Pixels & Print is a 48-hour design sprint, now in its 12th year, where students come together to use the power of design for good. Over two energizing days, you’ll collaborate with peers, faculty, and professional designers to create real, meaningful work for a real client. Over the course of the workshop, students work in teams to deliver a full design overhaul for a nonprofit organization, everything from: Brand identity systems, website redesign, social and storytelling campaigns, motion graphics, print and promotional materials, merchandise and packaging, and even 3D immersive experiences.
Past workshops have supported organizations focused on mental health, grieving children and families, cancer research, refugee communities, and youth empowerment. The work you create here is real, professional, portfolio-worthy and often award-winning.
Typographic Design
Before you design anything, you must master type. Everything else is built on it.
Typography is not decoration, it is the essential architecture of visual communication. This course gives you the full foundation: the history of typography, the science of typeface design, the art of text-setting, and the visual strategies that make type work at the highest level. You will develop the judgment to make typographic decisions that are elegant, smart, and purposeful.
No matter what you design or where your career takes you, typographic mastery is non-negotiable. This course instills it. The designers who understand type at this level do not just create better work, they define what good work looks like.
