Immersive Design

The next frontier of storytelling is already here. Design it. The way we tell stories is changing faster than most communicators can track, and AMVJ designers are built to stay ahead of that curve. This advanced course teaches you to design and build immersive digital environments for the communications industry using cutting-edge extended reality (XR) technology. You will master the best practices, theoretical frameworks, and the vocabulary of design for XR, the same technology reshaping medicine, manufacturing, training, and media. The question is not whether XR will transform military and civilian communications. It already is. The question is whether you will be the one designing that future. This course answers it.

Motion Design

Static images inform. Motion design commands attention. In an era of infinite content, motion design is the tool that makes audiences stop and watch. This course gives you the full motion design stack, the technology, the strategy, and the storytelling architecture to build rich, platform-ready multimedia experiences. You will work with still imagery, video, audio, and type, developing your command of sequential design through rigorous motion graphic processes. By the end, you will be able to take a project from thumbnail sketch to final render, applying concept, timing, rhythm, and the critical eye to evaluate your own work and push it further. Every frame is a decision. Make them count.

Pixels & Print

The students enrolled in the Advanced Military Visual Journalism program serve in the Navy or Marine Corps as mass communication specialists, public affairs professionals, photographers, graphic designers, and videographers. Service members come to Newhouse for 10 months, completing coursework in communications, photography, journalism, design, sound, and documentary production. Students gain strong storytelling skills, earn 30 credits toward an undergraduate degree, and can matriculate to Newhouse with successful completion.

Typographic Design

Before you design anything, you must master type. Everything else is built on it. Typography is not decoration, it is the essential architecture of visual communication. This course gives you the full foundation: the history of typography, the science of typeface design, the art of text-setting, and the visual strategies that make type work at the highest level. You will develop the judgment to make typographic decisions that are elegant, smart, and purposeful. No matter what you design or where your career takes you, typographic mastery is non-negotiable. This course instills it. The designers who understand type at this level do not just create better work, they define what good work looks like.
